The 10,000 Hours Show

A first-of-its-kind project, The 10,000 Hours Show seeks to encourage community volunteerism by rewarding civic engagement with a concert ticket. The concert is a celebration of volunteer achievements and the only admission is ten or more hours of volunteering.

Originally, The 10,000 Hours Show sought 1,000 volunteers who would contribute 10 hours of volunteer service apiece, or 10,000 total hours. In the second year, they accomplished more than double that goal. In its third year, The 10,000 Hours Show was open to volunteers and nonprofits from all counties in Iowa.

Partnering with United Way National has allowed for further expansion.

Volunteers from across the State, including several from Central Iowa Shelter, attended the 10K5 concert in April 2008, celebrating another ground-breaking year of community service.

Mission: Possible

Founders of the 10,000 Hours Show “believe that volunteerism is the cornerstone of any community. Through volunteerism citizens find purpose and personal connections, communities fill considerable needs, and students learn through practical experience.”

The program strives to:
· Encourage and support community involvement
· Promote volunteerism
· Reward all volunteers with entertaining, well-known musical acts
· Recruit new volunteers and retain past volunteers
· Provide extra incentive for first-time volunteers
· Supply easy access to volunteer opportunities
· Publicize community organizations, their causes, and their needs

To learn how you and other volunteers can earn admission to the 10K6 concert to be held in 2009, visit their website.
